Designing PV-EV integrated Residential Microgrids

Prof Srinivasan Keshav

Email: sk818 at cam dot ac dot uk

We look forward to welcoming Srinivasan Keshav, Robert Sansom Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science and Technology from the University of Cambridge to talk about designing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicle (EV) integrated residential microgrids.

Solar photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles and electrical storage devices are all now available off-the-shelf to homeowners both in the UK and around the developed world. Nevertheless, choosing how many solar panels to install and how much storage to buy are costly--yet poorly understood—decisions. Moreover, there is little understanding of the impact of EVs on sizing. This is due to the inherent variability of all three processes: solar generation, residential load, and EV arrivals and departures.

"In this talk, I will outline the problem, why it is challenging, and recent breakthroughs in my research group in producing sizing algorithms that are theoretically well grounded yet applicable in practice."

Biography:  Keshav’s interests lie broadly at the intersection of computer science and sustainability. He received a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. He was subsequently a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Labs and an Associate Professor at Cornell. In 1999 he left academia to co-found Ensim Corporation and GreenBorder Technologies Inc. Returning to academia, he was at the University of Waterloo in Canada from 2003 to 2019, holding a Canada Research Chair and later the Cisco Chair in Smart Grid. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, ACM, and IEEE, and a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Delhi. He served as Chair of ACM's Special Interest Group on Communications, is currently the Vice-Chair of ACM SIGEnergy, and the founding Editor-in-Chief of its magazine, Energy Informatics Review.
