Abstract

2017 has been a game changing year for crypto-currencies. The year started with ~$18 billion worth of crypto-currencies with Bitcoin accounting for 87 percent and ended with ~$572 billion worth of crypto-currencies with Bitcoin accounting for about 39 percent of that value.

At the same time ICO market has emerged as a major fund raising platform with $3 billion raised in 2017, with notable transactions such as KIN by KIK social messaging platform raising $100m and opening the door for mainstream firms. Recent news  include Telegram planning a $1 billion + ICO and Kodak developing a photo based coin.

Cryptocurrencies and ICOs will be in headlines throughout 2018.

In this talk, we will follow this trend in more depth and look at the opportunities it opens up for tech start-ups in Cambridge cluster.
